The US is proud to be country of immigrants. However, far more people from certain countries, e.g. Mexico, China and the Philippines are coming to the USA than from most of the others.
In order to maintain a diversity in the population, US laws regulate immigration from particular regions of the world.
Since the early 1990s the US government has granted annually 55,000 GreenCards via the Diversity-Visa-Program—that’s the official name of the annual GreenCard raffle. The selection of the winners is a random procedure, chances are about 1 in 25.
The number 2012 in the DV Program represents the American fiscal year starting on October 1st 2011 and ending end of September 2012. In the same period the winners receive their GreenCard.
The GreenCard Program is subject to annual review by the US Senate: So, this lottery could be the last one!
