Соединённые Штаты Америки гордятся тем, что они являются страной иммигрантов. Но намного больше людей приезжают из определённых стран, например, из Мексики, Китая и Филипинских островов, чем из других стран. Для того, чтобы сохранить многообразие населения, законы США регулируют иммиграцию из определённых областей мира.
С начала девяностых годов правительство США выдаёт ежегодно 55,000 зелёных карт в рамках прогаммы «Diversity-Visa-Program» – это официальное название ежегодной лотереи « Зелёной карте (GreenCard)». Выбор победителей – это случайная процедура. Число 2012 в программе «Diversity-Visa-Program» представляет американский финансовый год, начинающийся 1го октября 2011г. и заканчивающийся в конце сентября 2012г. В этот срок победители получат свою зелёную карту.
Программа «GreenCard-Program» подлежит ежегодному пересмотру сенатом США, следовательно она может оказаться последней.
