US authorities introduce additional security measures
Starting October 4, 2005, all travelers to the US must provide an address for their stay in the US prior to departure. Airlines are under the obligation of recording the first address in the US of all non-US citizens. Otherwise, the companies are facing fines and loss of landing rights, according to the Board of Airline Representatives (Barig) in Frankfurt on Main, Germany. All airlines on Barig want to provide their passengers with an appropriate form as soon as they book their flights, the form has to be handed in at check-in. In case passengers refuse this information, the airlines may have to refuse transporting them. Delta Airlines, for example, already introduced the procedure on September 7 in order to be prepared for October.
Tourists will usually state a hotel address. It remains unclear what kind of an address is to be provided by people who are going to be traveling by car or camper and won't have a regular address. Of course, after arrival, it will be checked whether the tourist is indeed staying at the hotel he or she has stated on the form.
In May of 2004 the US and the EU had already agreed to allow US customs access to travel and booking data of passengers traveling to the US. Apart from the tourists name, these include itinerary, booking information and means of payment. The first US address is the newest addition to this list.
