German health insurance in the US

As many advantages as the US system may have, the health insurance system is not part of it. Especially the German system probably offers you the best protection. Unfortunately, most insurances do not apply to longer stays abroad. This means, so far you usually had to cancel our German health insurance if you wanted to stay in the US for several years. At least if you wanted to stay in the US for more than 5 years. For some time now, there has been a way of solving this. The BDAE (Bund deutscher Auslandserwerbstätiger = expatriates association) especially takes care of persons who have their permanent residence in the US and can offer you health insurance modeled according to German law. As the policy holder the DLGes for the BDAE GmbH offers this service to individuals or company employees as a kind of ‘piggyback service,' maybe also as members of the association. The BDAE also is a public lobby for the protection of emigrant interests. The health insurance for residents, e.g. green card holders, even applies when other insurances no longer apply or at least partially no longer apply. The insurance company knows that you are living abroad permanently, so that permanent insurance is guaranteed. In-patient and out-patient treatment as well as painkilling dental treatment is covered. Within certain limits, transportation back to Germany is also covered.

However, there is no takeover guarantee for other health insurances or age provision, and coverage in the home country is also limited. That is why you should always, no matter how sure you are about the emigration issue, also take out a prospective entitlement insurance.
