Stories & Lifestyle: “Bizarre Scholarships”
We have reported about scholarship options in the US several times before. Not about those kinds of scholarships, however, that are rather bizarre and may actually make you laugh. It seems like the US are actually offering scholarships for almost any kind of qualification. Maybe some of our readers can identify with one of those?
Scholarships in the US The dream of studying in the US may quickly turn into a nightmare as soon as you have the first tuition. That's why many applicants go for one of the many scholarships in the US in order to realize their dream of attending a US college or university. Something not many people know about:
Most scholarships are only for a specific target group among the students - the intellectually gifted ones. However, there are other types of scholarships as well.
It doesn't always have to be a full scholarship, even small contributions may already help. That's also the approach of http://www.scholarcoach.com. This site offers an overview of the most unusual scholarship options. Read and laugh, here is a brief selection:
- Bunny Y. Burns Scholarship: As we have already reported, the city of Las Vegas is currently celebrating its 100th birthday. On this occasion, waitresses in university pubs may qualify for a $1,000 scholarship. This one is funded by the deceased Ms Burns, who had left her estate of $40,000 to the University of Las Vegas.
- Frederick & Mary Beckley Scholarship: Juniata College in Pennsylvania offers a $1,000 scholarship to left-handed students. The story behind: the couple was once excluded from the university's tennis team because they were both left-handed.
- David Letterman Scholarship: This supports average students who are showing a certain creative potential. Since Mr. Letterman has been a "C"-student himself once, he wants to prove that even average students do have a career chance and should be supported.
- Zolp Scholarship: One of the weirdest scholarships, and as far as we know, not suitable for any of our readers - if your last name is Zolp, you may qualify for financial study support.
- 8-Ball Scholarship: The University of Akron in Ohio offers a $1,000 scholarship to good billiard players. It was established by the class of 1966 in order to provide billiard rooms in the US.
This list may go on forever. For example, enthusiastic bakers may qualify for a $4,000 scholarship, skateboarders who perform well may get up to $3,000 from some universities.
There seems to be financial support for every minority in the US. Even though the sums may be small, they might often (like the pyramid system) open the doors to further support.
