Emigrating to USA

Since its foundation, the United States has always been a country of immigration. Even today many people dream of emigrating to USA. In oder to emigrate to USA they apply for a Green Card at USCIS or take part in the American Green Card Lottery.

Generally speaking, there are three ways to apply for a Green Card and finally emigrate to USA: through family, job and refugee or asylum status. Besides that, there are some special cases in which people can also apply for a Green Card for instance as diplomat or citizens of specific countries like Haiti or Cuba.

Waiting for the Green Card

Note that there is only a certain amount of visas available per year. Some people might be issued the Green Card right away, others might have to wait longer. Immediate relatives of an American citizen, like Parents, spouse and unmarried children under 21, will always be issued a visa right away. Other relatives to American citizens, like brothers and sisters, and all other applicants might have to wait longer.

Since 1990, the Green Card Lottery USA issues 50.000 Green Cards annually to people of low immigration rates to the U.S. Citizens of countries which sent over 50.000 immigrants to the U.S. during a time period of five years are not eligible to enter this congressionally-mandated program. For the winners of the diversity lottery, the dream of emigrating to USA comes to. The Green Card allows them to live and work in the U.S. permanently. Yet, they are allowed to leave and come back to the U.S. as many times they wish.
