The dream of many people coming to the United States is to obtain a Green Card. The Green Card entitles them to live and work in the United States permantently. It also allows them to leave as well as come back to U.S. whenever they wish.

In general, there are two ways to receive a Green Card. Either one applys for it at UCSIC or one takes part in the Government Green Card Lottery.

The Government Green Card Lottery is better known as the American Green Card Lottery or Diversity Visa Lottery.

What is the Green Card Lottery?

It is a congressionally-mandated program which issues 50.000 Green Cards annually to citizens of countries with low immigration rate to the U.S.

Citizens whose country of origin sends at the maximum 50.000 immigrants to the United States for a time period of 5 years can register for the lottery. Citizens of countries with higher immigration rates than that are not allowed to register for the Government Green Card Lottery. Hence, people from Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam currently can't take part in the lottery.

Green Card Lottery USA Requirements

Eligible applicants have to submit electronically a certain form as well as a 2x2 inch photograph. The application period is usually a year before the lottery takes place. If applicants haven't won in the Government Green Card Lottery, they can try it once again in the next year for as many times they wish.
