The most important step towards living and / or working in the US, is the application for a permanent resident card. The immigration visas are also called "green cards" and permit the green card holder to live and work in the USA without being limited to one specific employer. Together with that card you gain certain rights and obligations of an US citizen.
If you are one of those lucky people, who are planning to move to the United States of America, you have to fill out an immigration form. There are a number of ways to obtain a green card: employment-based and family based visas and the green card lottery.

The EB-1 Visa is for priority workers, meaning for persons of national interest to the US. The USA tries to attract highly-qualified foreign workers to their country. Within the EB-1 visa category you will find different subgroups and you should check which immigration form will be the right one for you.

The EB-2 Visa is for persons with exceptional qualifications / abilities. If you think that this visa might be the right one for you, you should check all requirements and conditions before you fill out the immigration form.

The EB-3 category is probably the most popular green card category. This category gives people who don't have extraordinary / exceptional skills, no advanced degrees and no executive positions in multinational companies the chance to obtain an immigration visa. The EB-4 category is for "special immigrants" describing a small heterogeneous group of people who may immigrate into the US due to political or moral reasons.

The fifth employment based immigration category is the Immigration Investor Program (EB-5 Visa). In contrast to other immigration applications, the EB-5 immigration form and the application can only be submitted by the investor himself.

Last but not least you have green card lottery program, which probably is the easiest way to get a green card. Since it is a lottery you do need a little bit of luck, but the requirements are not so hard and almost everybody can participate. If you are selected as a winner, you have to fill out the immigration form and have to go to the interview at the consulate, but if everything was successful, you can easily proceed with your immigration process.
