The process of immigrating into another country has always been very complex and demanding for every potential immigrant. On the other side, immigration also means a lot of bureaucratic and juristic effort for any state or country which is supposed to accept or voluntarily assimilates such applicants.

Development ot US Immigration Service

To regulate immigration, keep it under governmental control and also handle illegal immigration, which was always a grave problem for the United States, an official agency was needed.

Till 2003 the US Immigration Service, short for United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), which belonged to the United States Department of Justice, fulfilled these functions. The Immigration Service thoroughly monitored the process of immigration, controlled illegal and legal entry, precisely enforced the US immigration law and it was also responsible for the examination, detaining and deportation of illegal immigrants. 

Since the foundation of the Department of Homeland Security, the administration of Immigration Services, including permanent residence, naturalization, asylum, and other functions became the responsibility of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) which existed only transitory.

In 2005 the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) was founded  to which all former businesses of the BCIS were passed on to. Since then the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service's stated priorities are to promote national security, to eliminate immigration case backlogs, and to improve customer services.
