Even today, people dream of living and working in the USA, either for a certain amount of time or permantely. In their minds the Tourist Visa or a Visa Waiver Program are only eligible to stay for a short period of time and are not allowed to carry on a job in the U.S.

In order work in their profession, they will need to get one of the many work visas. The most common work visa is the H-1B visa for special professions. It is issued through the employer only and can be extended up to 6 years. With the H-1B visa, for example doctors, teachers, professors, artists and engineers can work in the United States.

If foreign citizens want to work and live in the USA permanently they will have to apply for the Permanent Resident Card commonly known as the Green Card. This immigrant visa allows them to stay in the U.S. as long as they wish. In general, there are two ways to obtain a Permanent Resident Card: either through Green Card Application form at USCIS or through the American Green Card Lottery which issues 50.000 Green Cards annually to citizens of countries with low immigration rate to the U.S.
