Naturalization

For many people the dream of a new life in the USA comes true, when they receive the green card. And those, who finally immigrate to the USA dream about becoming a US citizen (sooner or later). The process of becoming a US citizen is called "naturalization", but not everyone can apply for it. In order to apply for naturalization you have to meet some requirements.

As a permanent resident you have to live in the USA for at least 5 years, you have to be present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the past five years and you have to live within a state or USCIS district for a minimum of three months, before you apply for naturalization (the times can be shorter if you are married to and living with a U.S. citizen). Furthermore you have to behave properly and are not allowed to break any laws, you have to learn English and get to know the US history and government and you have to understand the principles of the US Constitution.

 
Once you applied for naturalization, the USCIS will have to approve your application and you have to attend a ceremony. You will be invited for the ceremony from the USCIS and they will inform you about the time and the date of your naturalization ceremony. You will also receive a certain form which you have to fill out and bring it with you. It is important to know that you will have to hand in your permanent resident card when you go to the ceremony. Instead of the card, you will receive a Certificate of Naturalization.

Once you have taken the Oath of Allegiance, you will be a citizen of the United States of America.
