Apparently, the US immigration service INS has financial problems. Despite an annual budget of $5 billion, they seem unable to pay their bills. The official reason for the delay of payment is the switch to a new computer system. Some leased cars have already been demanded back and in one INS office, water supply has been cut off because the bills hadn't been paid despite several reminders. Other US authorities have been demanding for a long time that the INS be split into two different authorities due to inefficient organization.
This week alone, 30 Cuban refugees have been captured on ht open sea and transported back to Cuba. More refugees had been found on a deserted island of the Bahamas and were transported back as well. Four ‘islanders' on the other hand, had to be taken to an American hospital due to medical problems. These four can now apply for the green card, since they have made it onto US soil...
Naturalization ceremony on July 4: On the US national holiday, several naturalization ceremonies were held in several big cities. Secretary of State Albright, who only came to the US herself when she was 11 from the Czech Republic, gave a speech for the occasion. In Detroit, Seattle and other cities, almost 1,000 persons each became US citizens.
