Record number of foreign students Never before have so many foreign students been studying in the US as last year. In 1999/2000 a total of 514,723 foreign students have studied in the US, 5% more than the year before. This means the US are still the most popular country for international students. More and more international students choose the community colleges described in chapter 4, especially those students who don't have the necessary qualification to attend university in their own country. More than 85,000 foreign students chose these institutions. The number of German students was approximately 9,800 in 1999. That means Germany is on 11th rank after China, Japan, India and other Asian countries.

Newspaper diversity in NYC In New York City, the diversity of population groups can also be recognized from the large number of newspapers in foreign languages. According to a new survey there are a total of 72 newspapers in 30 different languages.
