Martin Lutzer King, Jr. Day
This holiday is celebrated each year on the third Monday in January (18. January 2010). This date is around the time of King's birthday on January 15th and it is one of four holidays celebrated to remember an individual person.
The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination. The holiday was signed into law by Ronald Reagan in 1983 and examined in 1986. At the beginning there were some states who did not want to celebrate this holiday. They resisted and gave it a different name or combined it with other holidays. The first time it was officially celebrated in all 50 states was in the year 2000.
