Visa & More News: USCIS Director resigns
On March 13, 2008, Emilio Gonzalez, director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services USCIS, has announced his resignation effective April 18, 2008. Gonzalez, who was born in Cuba, has been in office since January 2006. As his reasons for resignation he stated that he wanted to spend more time with his family. Naturalization applications greatly increased during his time in office, in July 2007 alone USCIS received more than one million applications. Also applications for the employment-based green card reached an all-time high, since application had been opened to all countries.
All of this, however, has led to and is still leading to a backlog in application processing. Political observers believe this to be one of the reasons for Dr. Emilio Gonzalez's resignation. Gonzalez himself, however, denies this.
