US-Immigration Policy - The Green Card Lottery

In case of the United States, there are several ways to get a work permit. In general, people will receive a working visa. One distinguishes between work visas for different fields of work as for example religious workers, foreign media workers or artists as well as for workers coming from specific countries.

The H-1B is the most common work visa. It is designed for workers in a speciality occupation. This category includes e.g. doctors, nurses, health care workers, engineers, lawyers, professors and teachers. Note that lawyers and doctors have to have a license to be able to work in the U.S. Hence, they will have to take the American bar exam in order to be eligible for the H-1B visa. The H-1B visa can be granted for up to six years. The employer and not the employee will apply for it.

Green Card - permanent work permit

Whereas work visas permit foreign citizens to work in the United States temporarily, the Green Card, or commonly known as Permanent Resident Card, allows its holder to live and work in the United States permanently. In order to obtain the Green Card one has either to apply through USCIS or take part in the Green Card Lottery USA.

Many young people from all over the world study at an American University. They are holders of a certain student visa which allows them only to work on-campus. In order to be able to work off-campus, they will have to apply for a work permit through the form I-765 form.
