America Suits You

My mother really misses me and had a tough time when I decided to move to the U.S. And the times got even harder for her after I left. I am her only child, and she lives alone, and we don’t have a big family. And although she has friends in Berlin, she didn’t want me to leave. She relied on me a lot and is worried what will happen to her when she needs help and I am not around her to support her. But at the same time, she wanted to support me in my wishes. So, she was – and still is – conflicted about me living in America.

Over the past years, she got used to this setting. She likes that we can use Skype and that she can share, for example, how she decorated her apartment for Christmas. She also loves to show me whenever she buys something new for herself. But she would still prefer me living in the same city.

A couple of days ago she surprised me when she said “America suits you. Just everything seems to work out for you so well there.”

And she is absolutely right! My relationship works out and my career is taking off. I earn quite a bit more in the US than I did in Germany and my job is much, much more interesting. Although I only came because I fell in love with an American citizen, I must admit that my life outside of this relationship also rocks. And there is so much more I can look forward to. I can’t wait to see more from America and plan to travel more in this country. And although I am in my fifties now, I can’t wait to see what else is going to happen with my career. I have the feeling that there is much more good stuff coming for me.

America truly suits me well!
