Pussy-Hats and Porta-Potties

4 Feb 2017 Karina S. Henkel

I admit it, I admit it. I went to one of the women’s walks in January.

I went to the demonstration in Augusta because I was curious. I wanted to see and feel how Americans protest their own president. And I was not at all surprised to have a pleasant experience. The speakers were authentic, and whatever they said, I swear, Republicans and Democrats could have agreed with them. They talked about human rights, diversity, health care, tolerance, immigrants and respect. They didn’t talk about Trump at all, at least not here in Augusta. But they made pretty clear what kind of a world they want to live in. But although the speakers hardly mentioned Donald Trump, the protesters made their disapproval of him very clear. Hundreds of signs made fun of a man who is proud of not caring about what other people think of him.

But the first things my friends and I were looking for when we arrived at the Maine State House with thousands of other protesters were the porta-potties. Women need porta-potties at events like that. Luckily there were many women on this demonstration. (It is not a coincidence to meet many women on a women’s walk, though.) My friends and I found the three porta-potties quickly. I was so happy to see them and rushed to them, thinking that I could immediately enter one.

But twenty feet away I noticed a couple of women lingering. I asked them (just because I wanted to be polite and I didn’t expect a positive answer) if they were waiting for the porta-potties and they admitted that they were waiting and that they were just the beginning of a long line. They pointed with their fingers behind them. “The end of the line is way behind us.”

My friends and I started walking uphill looking for the end of the line and were flabbergasted. The line didn’t seem to have an end. Eventually we found it, but it felt as if we were a half mile away from the desired place surrounded by hundreds of women wearing pink pussy hats.

The next half hour I couldn’t focus on more than my physical need and the fact that the line grew rapidly behind us.

But the good news is that we made it on time and then were able to focus on the main reason why we came to this place in the first place: admiring pink pussy hats and all the people who truly want the best for their country and are looking for ways to get there
