People don’t get much vacation here - at least not according to my definition. But there seems to be a tendency for most people to take their meager vacation days in August and December. Right now, at work, I keep getting out-of-office-messages and my email box generally is refreshingly empty whenever I start my computer in the morning. There are only a few phone calls a day that I have to take care of. America is on vacation – hurray!

I have heard that noise for quite a while. I tried to ignore it for at least two weeks, maybe even longer. Whenever I turned my car to the left, there was this noise in my front wheels. It was very low and easy to overhear when the music was on.

Ok, I live in Maine. I have never lived in a different state in the US (yet). Therefore I can’t tell you how Americans generally are. I can’t even tell you how people in New England or how Mainers are.

I somehow got used to this: old people working in supermarkets or coffee shops, usually part-time, but working hard. There is this nice old lady working in my favorite coffee shop. I think she must be around 70 and you can tell that it’s hard for her to walk and stand.

The first thing I noticed when I started my work three years ago was that my new office was in one big room with a lot of cubicles. Cubicles are usually places where each desk is surrounded by room dividers.

Sometimes I feel like the people in our home-country Germany and especially the ones that come and visit us here get some things a little wrong. And that mostly is stuff that has to do with working life here in the US.

This week I thought a lot about what made moving here really worth it. I had one of those weeks where you just feel sad and probably homesick and everytime I feel this I always try to remind myself of what is really good about our new life.

I have a german colleague at work, which happens to live in the same area we do. Sometimes we take advantage of that and carpool to work. This week - while driving all the way down to Downtown - we started talking about work.
