The Golden Globe Awards: Glitz and glamour in Hollywood

11 Jan 2017 The American Dream

The red carpet is being rolled out a lot in Hollywood, as has happened last weekend: On Saturday, 8th 2017, the Golden globes took place for the 74th time. This means even more glamour and celebrities who are strolling through Los Angeles. What is the history behind the Award and who was the ultimate winner this year?

Founder of the Golden Globe Awards is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which is a group of international journalists, spreading information about movies and series all over the world. The origin of HFPA goes back a few years. In the 1940s, journalists from all over the world based in Los Angeles gathered together to exchange contacts, information and material.  Faithful to their slogan: “Unity Without Discrimination of Religion or Race”. Amongst the anxieties of war, the HFPA tried to reach out to the needs of the people who only wanted to get lost in the world of entertainment and also find some new inspiration and hope.

The very first solemn presentation of the Golden Globe Awards took place in 1944. Nobody could have foreseen the popularity this event caused in the public and entertainment industry, but until today it is an annual date everybody is looking forward to. Each year in January will not only the best movie, actor or music be awarded, but the ceremony also serves a good cause in collecting donations for charity and support the interest in the study of arts. Don’t get us started about fashion at the Golden Globes - there is lots to see and you can definitively check out the stunning celebrities in their robes and might get a glimpse on the newest fashion trend for 2017.

Let’s get back to the reason why everybody comes to Hollywood that night: the award. The different categories linked to movies and TV-shows like “Best Actor” or “Best Original Song” were created in the course of film history. Some only lasted for a couple of years, others had yet to be invented. In 2007 the category “Best Animated Feature Film” was included, which nominates animated movies like “Happy Feet” or the current one “Sing”. Nowadays there are 25 categories presented at the Golden Globe Awards - 14 in the Movie- and 11 in the TV-sector.

Seven times an Award - new Golden Globes record!

Big winner and record breaker at the 74th Golden Globe Awards was the movie “La La Land”, a mix between musical and comedy movie, which is a little reminder of the golden era of musicals. The movie was nominated in seven categories and took all the seven awards home. The leading roles are played by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, the movie can be seen in most of the theaters yet. The Trailer promises a nice, sweeping story about dreams and the hard work fulfilling them. The musical attitude and positive appearance of the characters catches up with you until you can’t help but smile. And honestly: Who wouldn’t want to get an impression, how good Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling really are in singing? We will definitively check out “La La Land”.

Special Award for life’s work

One Category at the Golden Globe Awards stands out: The Cecil B. DeMille Award was created in 1952 in order to honor a person in the entertainment field for its outstanding life’s work and is now part of the annual ceremony.

This year, actress Meryl Streep received the award. Her thoughtful and also critical acceptance speech touched all those present. Streep emphasized the rich diversity in the film business, introducing colleagues and their heritages one by one, at the beginning of her speech: "Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if we kick them all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts […]".

Meryl Streep can look back on a very successful career in the film industry and has played various stunning roles until today. We could name an endless list, but here are two examples: Meryl Streep as Prime minister Margaret Thatcher in “Iron Lady” (2011) or the chef Julia Child in ”Julie&Julia” (2004).

Altogether, this was an exciting night for Hollywood and all its viewers. We are delighted about all the new movies and TV-Shows, which will help us getting through the cold winter evenings.
